Why Addicts With Mental Illness Need Specialized Drug Rehab Centers

Drug and substance abuse has been an exceedingly prevalent problem that is plaguing society. With the stresses of modern day life, it can be easy for anyone to become addicted to a drug. Unfortunately, over time we've come to notice a trend in certain demographics that are more prone to developing addictions.

One group of individuals who appear overly susceptible to these issues are those suffering from mental disorders. People with mental illnesses are twice as likely to have a substance abuse problem as compared to the general population. A minimum of 20% of people suffering from mental illness have some form of co-occurring addiction problem.

While there are different types of drug rehab centers, these individuals require customized help from substance abuse treatment centers that specialize in aiding those with mental disorders. These patients will usually require more hands on care from specialists than regular addicts.

However, one of the problems that arise from this demographic of addicts is how early they can develop narcotic, alcohol, or even weed addictions. Approximately 70% of mental health problems have their onset during an individual's childhood or adolescence. To make matters worse, young people ages 15 to 24 are more likely to experience these mental disorders, as well as any type of substance abuse problems.

It's important to get these individuals treatment at drug rehab centers as early as possible to prevent their abuse disorders from escalating. And because these younger sufferers are likely unable to care for themselves even if they were not addicts, parents or legal guardians need to take the initiative to find them help.

Due to the prominence of these problems, many professional drug rehab centers are well-versed in using treatments that cater to those with mental illness. The earlier someone receives treatment, the better the chances they have of recovery.
