Please note that this test is not a substitute for medical advice, and is not meant to provide an official diagnosis of alcohol addiction or abuse, dependence or alcoholism. If you're concerned about physical or mental health and/or substance dependence, or have a question about your own drinking problem or that of a loved one, either now or in the future, please discuss with your physician, healthcare professional or our treatment helpline advisors by calling the phone number above.

Our interactive test is one of the most widely used measures for assessing alcohol abuse and disorders, the MAST (Michigan Alcohol Screen Test) is a questionnaire designed to provide a rapid and effective screening for lifetime problems with alcohol and symptoms of alcoholism. The MAST has been productively used in a variety of settings with varied populations. MAST was created in 1971 and is still considered one of the most accurate screening tests, identifying dependent drinkers up to 98% of the time. The AUDIT test which was developed in the 1980s by the World Health Organization that has only 92% effectiveness in identifying hazardous and harmful drinking patterns is the most used test out there. However, with MAST detecting dependent drinkers up to 98% of the time and excellent track record, we decided to use it instead of AUDIT. For additional information on addiction, please visit our treatment programs, and learning resources, please see, for example: Selzer, M.L. (1971) ‘The Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST): The quest for a new diagnostic instrument’, American Journal of Psychiatry, 127:1653-1658.
