SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. It is a science-based program that draws on cognitive behavioural therapy and rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT) to teach you how to manage addictive behaviour on your own terms. Where traditional 12-step models centre on surrender and lifelong group attendance, SMART Recovery addiction treatment puts the tools in your hands and expects you to use them independently.
At the Canadian Centre for Addictions, SMART Recovery runs inside your broader residential treatment. It is one part of a multi-layered clinical program that includes individual counselling, group therapy, mindfulness practice, psychoeducation, and wellness programming. Your SMART Recovery sessions feed directly into your one-on-one work with your counsellor or psychotherapist, and vice versa. The two tracks reinforce each other.
